sypa 2010 selects

above are my entries for the 2010 singapore young photographer award. missed the deadline last time round and since this is my last opportunity to enter this bi-annual competition, i thought i’d give it a go. much love and thanks to my dear sarah for helping me with the process given my absence from singapore.

from top —┬áchampagne glasses and petals (abstract), sinatra (portrait), sepia arcadia #1 (nature), tattoo artist (people at work), saivite sadhu (portrait), flight of the light (night scene).

world press photo 2009

the results of the world press photo 2009 competition is out. click here to view the winning photo as well as to access the galleries containing the winners in the various categories.

this is a competiton that i follow closely because year after year, it yields the very best work in the field of photojournalism and on top of that, i am constantly amazed by the vision and the aesthetics on display. with the advent of new media, there is a general view in the industry that the days of shooting purely hard news is over.

with the proliferation of visual capture devices, hardly any newsworthy event is left undocumented. what sets the photojournalist apart is the ability to harness technology to not only tell the story, but tell the story in a way that is compelling and personal. perhaps the term ‘photo-diaryist’ might be more appropriate in this age.

above are some pictures i shot yesterday during the photomarathon. i have to say, walking around the whole day taking pictures was more exhausting than i had initially thought it would be. though i didn’t win anything, i relish the experience and will definitely be back for more next year. thanks to all my friends who so graciously agreed to pose as models in my pictures. props to canon too for organising such a well-run event.

that’s john cosgrove in the picture with us by the way. he’s the official photographer of amazing race asia and one of the judges of the photomarathon. bloody good chap.

canon photo marathon

the canon photo marathon is back in singapore this year! i did not join the previous years so this will be the first time i’m participating. the format of the competition looks interesting – 3 assignments based upon 3 themes to be completed in 3 hours each. at the end of each assignment, contestants will have to return to the starting point to upload their best photo (without any image editing) before receiving the next assignment.

i’m sure competition will be really stiff and the assignments challenging so i’ll go with the mindset of enjoying myself and doing my darndest. the prizes look really good – a canon 40d (oooh…)and a trip to japan for the ‘best of show’ winner (competitor with the highest aggregate score across the assignments), and various other models for the winners of the individual assignments. do check out the official site for details on registration, prizes, rules and regulations, etc. do that by clicking here. canon will also be hosting a photography seminar conducted by john cosgrove, a veteran photojournalist, one week before the competition. sign up for that by clicking here.

anyway, while i was looking at the canon 40d on dpreview.com, i saw this video that featured canon’s ‘eos integrated cleaning system’, which in a nutshell prevents dust from spoiling your image. i was actually more intrigued by the shutter speed of the canon 1d mark III (the pro flagship model). they just had to run that sequence thrice. we get it, we get, fastest camera in the market… watch the video below.
